J., 21, 153-59, 1839.Brown was the first surgeon in the United States to specialize in orthopedics, founding the Orthopedic Infirmary of the City of Boston (soon renamed the Boston Orthopedic Institution) in 1838. Brown was also the first in New England to popularize tenotomies for club–feet.
