Split off from consciousness – ‘dissociated’ – they embody painful experiences, but become autonomous by virtue of their segregation from the main stream of consciousness” (E.L. Bliss, Multliple personality, allied disorders, and hypnosis, N.Y., Oxford University Press, 1986).
