The gold-headed cane.

London: John Murray, 1827.

This charming “autobiography” tells of the adventures of the famous gold-headed cane, successively in the possession of Radcliffe, Mead, Askew, William and David Pitcairn, and Baillie, and then retired to a glass case in the library of the Royal College of Physicians of London. Besides good biographies of the several owners of the cane, the book gives interesting information on the condition of medicine in England in the 18th century. Several good reprints of the book are available; in particular may be mentioned that of 1915 which has an introduction by Osler and a preface by F. R. Packard, and one edited by H.S. Robinson, 1932; facsimile of author’s own copy of the 1827 edition published by the Royal College of Physicians of London, 1968.

The roll of the Royal College of Physicians of London; comprising biographical sketches. (Lives of the fellows.) 12 vols.

London: The College, 18612005.

“Munk’s Roll”. Covers the period 1518-2005 and onward. The entire work is available as a searchable electronic resource from the Royal College of Physicians at this link.

"The first volume in this series of obituaries was published in 1861. It was compiled by the Harveian Librarian, William Munk. He researched and complied entries for all fellows (voting members) and licentiates (non-voting members), from the RCP’s foundation in 1518to 1825. Subsequent Harveian Librarians have continued this work, commonly called Munk’s Roll in honour of its original compiler. Volumes from 1825 onwards only include past fellows due to rising numbers of fellows, licentiates and later, members.

"The RCP now has a near-complete collection of obituaries for past fellows, from 1518 to the present (and licentiates from 1518 to 1825), making it an invaluable biographical resource for those interested in medical and social history, and family historians.

"Eleven printed volumes were published covering 1518 to 2004. Entries for 2005 onwards are published online as Volume XII.

"All entries from volume I (1518-1700) to volume XI (1998-2004) have been published online.

"There is a searchable index to all entries.

"Plarr’s Lives of the Fellows is a biographical register of the fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. With over 9000 obituaries now available online, and more being added every month, it not only serves as a record of the evolution of surgery, but also an important archive for English social history.

"Victor Plarr (1863-1929), who was the college librarian from 1897 until his death, produced the first two printed volumes which were published after his death in 1930. Nine print volumes were produced with the last one published in 2005. These covered all those fellows (FRCS) who were known to have died between 1843, when the FRCS was established, and 2002. In 2006, the Lives Online website was set up and entries began to be uploaded for all those fellows who had died since 2002.

"In January 2016, the last obituaries published in printed volumes one to nine were put online, a project eight years in the making. However, if you know of a fellow who died before 2002 and is not listed on this website, please do let us know.

"The Lives of the Fellows team continue to add entries for newly deceased fellows on a monthly basis" (http://livesonline.rcseng.ac.uk/, accessed 03-2017).

De medicine claris scriptoribus in quinque partitus tractatus. In his: Libelli duo

Lyon: J. de Campis, 1506.

French physician and writer Symphorien Champier's biographical study of famous medical writers, De medicine claris scriptoribus in quinque partibus tractatus, issued as part of his Libelli duo, has been called the first history of medicine written after De medicina by the first century CE Roman writer Aulus Cornelius Celsus. The brief listing of the writings of these famous physicians which it includes is considered the first published bibliography of medical literature after Galen's bibliography of his own writingsDe libris propriis liber, which was written in the second century CE, but not printed until 1525, and the brief bibliography of Galen's writings which was first published in Articella seu Opus artis medicinae, edited by Franciscus Argilagnes (Venice, 1483).

Breslauer & Folter, Bibliography: Its History and Development (1984) No. 10. A bibliographical study of Champier by P.A. Allut appeared from Lyons in 1859; a check-list of his writings was published by J.F. Ballard and M. Pijoan in Bull. med. Libr. Ass., 1940, 28, 182-88.

Bibliotheca universalis, sive catalogus omnium scriptorum locupletissimus, in tribus linguis. Latina, Graeca, and Hebraica. 3 vols. and appendix.

Zürich: apud C. Froschouerum, 15451555.

This was one of the first attempts at a universal bibliography. Unfortunately the section on medicine (liber xxi) was never published. William Osler used the Bibliotheca universalis as one of the models for his own Bibliotheca Osleriana. He placed Gesner in the most important section (“Bibliotheca prima”), and once remarked:”I am not sure that this fellow should go into ‘Prima’, but I love him so much that I must put him there. Besides, he is the Father of Bibliography”.

During 1710 Boerhaave lectured on the Methodus discendi medicinam. In 1726 the first edition was published from notes taken at his lectures but without his permission. Lindeboom, Bibliographia Boerhaaviana (1959) No. 91, describes this edition as having 457pp., with one figure, but does not name a publisher. Another edition with 458pp. was issued by J. F. Bernard in Amsterdam, also in 1726, and a third printing appeared in Venice in 1727. As Boerhaave had the habit of constantly citing classic works on various subjects during his lectures, this book served partly as a kind of brief guide to the major literature on the topics it covered. Medical bibliography, A and B.

York, England: Printed at the Gazette-Office, 1833.

Although of limited scientific value, this extensively annotated work is the most humorous bibliography of medical literature ever published, even if the humor is of a "rarified" nature. Atkinson, surgeon to the Duke of York and senior surgeon to York County Hospital, published this work when he was 74 years old. There is nothing in it to indicate that he ever intended to continue the work beyond the letter B. Most copies were issued with a cancel title, London, John Churchill, 1834.  Digital facsimile from Google Books at this link.

Index Medicus. A monthly classified record of the current medical literature of the world. Vols. 1-21.

New York, 18791899.

"Functionally, however, the greatest difference between the two publications [Index Medicus and the Index-Catalogue] was that the Index-Catalogue was a government publication and Index Medicus was not. For its entire run, the Index-Catalogue was published by the Surgeon-General's Office of the US Army, while Index Medicus was privately published by a series of small publishers, who had difficulty making the work profitable. In this period (1879–1926), the Index-Catalogue had a secure source of funding, while Index Medicus was expected to be self-supporting. As Billings wrote in his introduction to the first volume of Index Medicus:

It has often been suggested that it is highly desirable that [the Index-Catalogue] should be supplemented by some current publication, which should show all recent works, together with articles in periodicals, arranged by subjects [emphasis in the original], but until quite lately no proper means have been available for such an undertaking. Now, however, Mr. F. Leypoldt, of New York City, proposes to undertake the publication of such a current medical bibliographical serial.

"The role of Leypoldt has been described in different ways, but it is undeniable that, between 1879 and 1926, Index Medicus had a number of publishers, including Leypoldt in New York, George Davis in Boston, and the Carnegie Foundation in Washington. There was even a period (1899–1902) when publication of Index Medicus ceased and was briefly replaced by a Paris publication called the Bibliographica Medica. There were also years, such as 1895–1899, when the title page mysteriously read only “Published by the Editors, New York and Boston.” Sometimes (as in 1879), publishers were listed for London, Paris, Leipzig, Amsterdam, and St. Petersburg, and would-be contributors were advised to submit their publications to these Europeans offices for inclusion in Index Medicus. A certain collection development objective is implied here: the introductory letter already cited made it clear that, after indexing, the publications would be added to the collections of the library" (S. J. Greenberg & P. E. Gallagher, "The great contribution: Index MedicusIndex-Catalogue, and IndexCat," J. Med. Libr. Assoc. 97(2009) 108–113).

A second series, edited by Fletcher and F. H. Garrison, vols. 1-6, 1921-27. In 1927 the Quarterly Cumulative Index to Current Medical Literature (12 vols., 1916-26) was amalgamated with the Index Medicus to form Quarterly Cumulative Index Medicus (1927-56) which, with No. 6777, was superseded in 1960 by a new monthly Index Medicus with an annual Cumulated Index Medicus. The gap 1900-02 was partly filled by Bibliographia Medica, 3 vols., Paris, 1900-1903, and by Index Medicus Novus, Vienna, Nos. 1-12, 1899; Nos. 1-3, 1900. The first three series of Index Medicus were reprinted New York, Johnson Reprint, 1967. Bibliographia Medica was reprinted New York, Johnson Reprint, 1972.

Index-catalogue of the library of the Surgeon General’s Office. Vol. 1-16; 2nd ser., vol. 1-21; 3rd ser., vol. 1-10; 4th ser., vol. l-11(A-Mn); 5th ser., vol. 1-3.

Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 18801961.

In 1836 Surgeon General Joseph Lovell established a small collection of medical books for the use of his staff. This was the origin of the “Surgeon General’s Library.” John Shaw Billings did much to develop the library; he planned and started the Index Catalogue, the first large-scale subject index of any library, and the first truly comprehensive subject index of the published literature any science. Four years prior to the beginning of publication of the Index Catalogue Billings issued a Specimen Fasciculus of a Catalogue of the National Medical Library Under the Direction of the Surgeon-General, United States Army (Washington, 1876). In addition to showing the ambitious nature of his cataloguing plans, the fasciculus shows that Billings viewed the Library of the Surgeon General's Office as a national medical library. Series 1-4 indexes about 3,000,000 books, journal articles, and pamphlets. In the 5th series only monographs and theses are included. For continuation see Nos. 6784, 6786.9. In 1952 the name of the library was changed to Armed Forces Medical Library; it became the National Library of Medicine in 1956. See S. J. Greenberg & P. E. Gallagher, "The great contribution: Index MedicusIndex-Catalogue, and IndexCat," J. Med. Libr. Assoc. 97 (2009) 108–113.

Bibliotheca Osleriana. A catalogue of books illustrating the history of medicine and science, collected, arranged and annotated by Sir William Osler, Bt. and bequeathed to McGill University. [Edited by . W. W. Francis, R. H. Hill, Leonard Mackall, and Archibald Malloch.]

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1929.

This bibliography of over 7,500 titles, edited by W. W. Francis, R. H. Hill, Leonard Mackall, and Archibald Malloch, is the catalogue of Osler’s magnificent library. For it Osler wrote an unfinished Introduction entitled "The Collecting of a Library." In that he indicated that formal planning for the catalogue with L. L. Mackall, W. W. Francis, and T. A. Malloch was underway before his death. The catalogue, published a full 10 years after Osler's death, follows Osler's distinctive organizational scheme. In many cases the annotations are based on notes that Osler wrote in his books, making this catalogue one of the most interesting to read of all annotated bibliographies in the history of medicine and science, and a reflection of Osler's bibliophilic taste and personality.

Fielding Garrison reviewed "The Osler Catalogue" in the Bulletin of the N. Y. Academy of Medicine, 5, 860-863, September 1929. A digital facsimile of his review is available from PubMedCentral at this link.

On the 25th anniversary of the publication of the catalogue, which coincided roughly with the formal opening of the Osler Library at McGill, W. W. Francis published some brief, but distinctive comments on the catalogue and his role as chief editor in its production as "Osler's Catalogue", J. Hist. Med., 9, 464-465, 1954.

The Bibliotheca Osleriana was reprinted in 1969 with addenda and corrigenda, and a preface by Lloyd G. Stevenson, Montreal, McGill-Queen’s University Press. A digital facsimile of the 1969 edition is available from the Internet Archive at this link.

Synonyma medicinae, seu clavis sanationis.

Milan: Antonio Zarothus, 1473.

The first printed medical dictionary. It was originally published at Ferrara, 1471-2?, of which the only recorded copy is a fragment of 21 leaves in the Bodleian Library. ISTC No. is00526000. “The great work of Simon Januensis, physician, sub-deacon and capellanus to Pope Nicolas IV, called Clavis Sanationis by his friend the mathematician Campanus to whom he inscribed it, is better known as Synonyma Medicinae. In the preface he tells of thirty years of labour devoted to the work and of arduous travels in search of knowledge .. The authorities quoted show the working library of a physician at the beginning of the thirteenth century ... Most of the terms are briefly defined, and longer accounts with references to authors are given of the more important drugs, as of the poppy, taken chiefly from Dioscorides. Arabic and Greek names are about equally divided. No classification of drugs is attempted, but under such terms as “coloris” and “oleum” long lists are given. The ophthalmic definitions are excellent and taken, as a rule, from Demosthenes, whose works were then available” (Osler, quoted by Deborah Coltham, 02-2017). Digital facsimile of the 1473 edition from BnF Gallica at this link. Simon's lexicon is being edited and translated into English as a wiki project at Simon Online.
